Repcal Is Great Food For Reptiles

An exotic pet owner should provide cuttlebone, vitamin supplement, natural diet, and commercial foods. All of these are our weapons against Metabolic Bone Disease. This is an umbrella term referring to abnormalities of bones caused by a broad spectrum of disorders.

It’s extremely important to supplement a baby tortoise’s diet with vitamin D3 and calcium.

Young tortoises need a high level of calcium in the food. This is very important, both for healthy bone and shell development.

Dandelions are a significant source of calcium and important for this reason. They are also generally very popular with tortoises who will eat the flowers as well as the leaves.

Other similar plants such as milk thistle can also form a significant part of their diet. Click to read What Should I Feed my Tortoise for more feeding ideas.

The importance of calcium

Cuttlebone can provide your tortoise with calcium. Calcium is a very important consideration in the diets of tortoises, being a key component of the shell, as well as their skeletal system, and the eggshells of laying females.

This mineral is also important in other ways too, at cellular level, in the transmission of nerve impulses for example.

There are various ways to supply calcium, including the provision of pieces of cuttlebone, as more usually sold in pet stores for birds such as budgerigars. You can simply break this up into pieces, making it easier for your tortoise to eat.

It is easy to add the food product RepCal to your tortoises’ diet. We feed RepCal to Box Turtles, Central American Striped Leg Turtles, African Sulcata Tortoises, etc., everything loves this food!

Rep-Cal Tortoise Food has been tested successfully by reptile veterinarians.   It is fortified with optimal levels of vitamins and minerals like calcium and Vitamin D3 so no other food or supplements are required.

It is best to feed every morning. You should offer your pet access to its food for the entire daylight period. Add slightly more food than your tortoise can eat in a day to a shallow dish. Be sure to empty and clean the dish at the end of each day.

Feed on a plate or other flat surface.

We recommend a ceramic tile or other clean, flat surface because some animals, such as tortoises have difficulty picking up food from deep bowls.

Pellets can be moistened in water or fruit juice before feeding: Some find that the softer soaked pellets are easier to pick up.

Rep-Cal has long been the industry leader in reptile nutrition, and no other company backs their products with as much research and expertise In addition to being nutritionally sound, Rep-Cal diets avoid the problems associated with most commercial diets.

 General Tortoise Care Considerations
A healthy tortoise is alert and aware of its surroundings. Its eyes are bright and its nose is dry. It will eat and drink readily, and enjoy being soaked in warm water.

Tortoises’ stools are dark and formed. Their urine may be clear in part. White chalky deposit its in urine are termed urates and are normal.

Food intakes will be less than optimal when animals are cold, sick or stressed. Low food intake is unhealthy for your tortoise and will increase its susceptibility to serious disease.

Ensure that the humidity level and temperature is appropriate for the species and observe for stressful conditions.

Factors that may stress your tortoise include a cage that is too small or too cold, recent shipping, and dehydration from infrequent soaking. If low food intake persists, consult your veterinarian.
